Mrs. Harrington’s 3rd grade class began a kindness challenge during the month of October to show students the importance of kindness, generosity, and community support. The kindness challenge is in support of Austin Hatch, an Excelsior Springs graduate and former Westview Tiger. He was recently diagnosed with cancer, and the students in Mrs. Harrington’s class are raising funds to help Austin with his cancer treatment expenses. This Kindness Challenge took an extra step when Mrs. Gear’s kindergarten class joined the efforts and began the Kickin’ Cancer with Coins efforts. During the week of October 24-28, students were invited to bring in pennies of Monday, nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday, and dollar bills on Friday. The efforts of these classes gained notoriety around the Kansas City area, as Fox4 News came to school to interview Mrs. Harrington and her students about their 3rd grade Kindness Challenge.
